Most people wait until they understand venture before they invest in it. Ashley Flucas did the opposite, on purpose.
She went to Duke, then Harvard Law, then practiced capital markets law at Davis Polk. While she was abroad she read The Monk and the Riddle and decided the career box she had been handed was not the one she wanted. She came back to Florida in 2018 with no friends in tech and a search engine. She found AngelList, started writing small checks into other people's SPVs, made the deals she could afford to be wrong about, and treated the reps as the education.
Two years of reps later she launched her own first SPV, a LATAM company called Foodology. Andreessen Horowitz invested alongside her. Within a year the New York Times profiled her. Today Flucas Ventures has made 250+ investments including Databricks, Brex, and Mercury, and she runs it as COO of Summit Ventures, which spans 15 industries across 8 countries.
The structure underneath all of it is a barbell. On one end, venture, for asymmetric upside. On the other, an operating role and real estate, for income and tax treatment. The two sides move at different speeds, which keeps the portfolio balanced while one side swings hard. She treats the illiquidity of venture as a discipline tool: once the money is in, the market noise stops mattering and she cannot talk herself into selling.
The tax story runs in parallel, and it is the part most high earners miss. She moved her domicile to Florida, chose an operating role that gave her equity participation and depreciation access, and invested in QSBS-qualifying startups. Her effective rate now runs in the mid-teens, the result of career design plus investment type plus zip code, not a loophole.
Three takeaways from the conversation
Reps beat research: action over analysis paralysis
Ashley's read is that the studying most people treat as a prerequisite is the thing keeping them on the sidelines. She started by writing small checks into deals she could afford to be wrong about and let the reps teach her what good looked like. Her warning is blunt: if you just keep studying, you will get analysis paralysis.
The real estate-venture barbell
Ashley describes structuring her portfolio as a barbell rather than spreading herself thin. Venture sits on one end for asymmetric upside; an operating role and real estate sit on the other for income and tax treatment. The two sides carry different tax profiles and move at different velocities, so the capital she deployed years ago keeps working while the income side harvests on its own timeline.
Career design as tax design: what you keep is the game
Ashley's sharpest point is that the tax bill, not the salary, decides how much actually compounds. She pushed her own effective rate into the mid-teens through Florida domicile, an operating role with depreciation access, and QSBS-qualifying venture, not a loophole. As she puts it, it is not just what you make, it is what you keep.
